EXPRESS AND STAR RALLY

Black ice added an unexpected hazard to the Express and Star rally organized by the Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire Club recently.
Ninety-one competitors took part, starting from Wolverhampton, Hereford, Oxford, Newark and Liverpool on Saturday evening, and motoring to the Wolverhampton municipal aerodrome to start a common night navigation section of some 380 miles, which took them through Church Stretton, the Welsh border country, over the Black Mountains and the Cotswolds — where conditions were icy.
The Express and Star Trophy was won by T. Fisher (A35) of the Hereford club who lost 30 marks. His navigator, J. R. Thomas was awarded the Raybould Smith Trophy.
J. Sunley (Sunbeam Rapier) with T. A. M. Piggott was runner-up with 50 marks, and next came T. S. Baker (A35), whose navigator was Dr. W. P. Dallas Ross, and who lost 180 marks.
First class awards A. E. Cleghorn (Morgan). 290 marks; K. E. Perkins (Ford Utility), 370. Second class awards: Mrs. V. M. Harper (Standard 10), 380 marks; K. M. Law (TR2), 390 marks.
S. W. Fletcher Trophy for best Wolverhampton Club member was won by Mrs. Harper, and her navigator Miss Valerie Domleo won the Ron Moore Memorial Trophy.
Team award: Fisher and Mrs. Harper, second place Sunley and J. Bremner. Driving test award: J. R. Pearce (A35).
