The event moved from strength to strength in 1984 with Audi Sport UK's encouragement. The economic difficulties of the early eighties meant only 80 cars started to attempt 80 stage miles in 8 stages. Without a major sponsor this could not have been contemplated by the Club.

An attempt was made to attract entries by a discounted entry fee. The experiment did not have the desired result and those that did enter were asked to pay an extra £10 at signing on.

With a Quattro one / two the event was a success for Audi although it was privateer, Malcolm Wilson who beat the Audi official team and Michele Mouton.

The event was, as usual, the last round of the national championship. 1984 was a hard fought year with Dai Llewellin beating Phil Collins to the title on the Audi Sport.

Not only was the Championship a classic but so were the night long celebrations in the Belle Vue Royal at Aberystwyth.
